Abstract

Visual impairment in children can significantly affect their quality of life and achievement through various multidimensional implications. Timely visual acuity testing is essential, especially considering the high prevalence of this condition among children. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of two methods of visual acuity testing, namely E chart and Landolt Ring, in children. This method is expected to provide a deeper understanding of the effectiveness and relevance of optotype use in the context of children’s visual acuity testing. This study is expected to provide an important contribution in developing a more effective and sensitive approach to visual acuity testing for children during their growth and development.
This quantitative study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of two methods of visual acuity testing, E chart and Landolt Ring, in children aged 3-6 years in PAUD and TK, Lakarsantri District, Surabaya. The research method used is quantitative with a population of all students aged 3-6 years in PAUD and TK. The research sample of 102 students was selected using purposive sampling in the period February-April 2024. Primary data were collected through direct observation by conducting visual acuity testing using E chart and Landolt Ring. Data analysis was carried out through observation techniques to measure the speed of optotype identification in both methods.
Research results Based on the output in the Independent Sample Test table, it is known that the results of the T-test (comparison of 2 variables) in Sig. (2-tailed) showed 0.000 on the E-Chart test results for the right and left eyes. And 0.000 on the Landolt Ring test results for the right and left eyes. Where in this case there has been an agreement that the results of Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) if it is less than 0.05 then it is stated that there is a comparison or difference and if it is greater than 0.05 it is stated that there is no comparison or difference.
The conclusion that can be drawn is that the duration of visual examination results using the E chart produces better results than the Landolt ring. So e charts can be chosen more effectively for visual inspection in children aged 3-6 years.
